4.4 Remediation: evaluation criteria of approaches and techniques

Once measurable remediation objectives have been established, several factors have an impact on the decision making process. These basic evaluation criteria include engineering and non-engineering considerations [IAEA-2006b]:

  • Effectiveness in remediating the contamination;
  • Ease of implementation
  • Cost associated with the remediation programme;
  • Occupational safety and health risks associated with the technology;
  • Potential secondary environmental impacts (collateral damage);
  • Prior experience with the application of the technology;
  • Socio-economic considerations.
