A.3 Overview of reported hazardous contaminants in presence of radiological contaminants worldwide

The presented overview of hazardous contaminants detected world wide at radiologically contaminated sites is the result of a literature study in which data has been combined that have been published in free available literature.

The aim to provide this information is to create awareness of the possibility about the presence of other hazardous and/or radioactive materials at sites to be investigated or which are already under environmental investigation or remediation so that appropriate measures can be taken to prevent new legacies.

The provided information itself has the aim to give guidance based on gained experiences, lessons learned, etc. acquired during environmental remediation projects.

The overview (e.g. table) contains the following information about a hazardous contaminant:

  1. Candidate hazardous contaminant. The hazardous contaminants are reported in alphabetical order.
    • The name/appearance of the hazardous contaminant. The name, text string, etc. of the hazardous contaminant is equal as reported in the applicable reference.
    • Other possible present-contaminants. These contaminants have been detected and reported in the presence of the hazardous contaminant. Other possible contaminants can be radiological as well as hazardous contaminant(s). The applied text is equal as reported in the applicable reference.
  2. Industrial. Hazardous contaminants have been reported at different radiologically contaminated sites. These industrial sites can be specified according to:
    • Activity. The industrial activity by which the hazardous contaminants are produced.
    • Usage. The usage/process by which the hazardous contaminants could be released and might cause an environmental problem.
  3. Type of (environmental) contaminated site. The contamination caused by the hazardous contaminant might be a specific site, soil, groundwater, etc.
  4. Relative mobility of candidate contamination. The presented information on mobility given in here is intended to be used as guidance rather than to be seen as an absolute value, but it should be taken into account to prevent that an eventual contamination will become from a minor problem a major problem . Certainly, for elements other than those listed, mobility should be assessed on a case by case basis [IAEA-1999a], [IAEA-2006b]. The relative mobility is presented (if reported) as “s = slow, m = medium, f = fast” for:
    • The unsaturated zone.
    • The saturated zone.
  5. Example(s) of sites where the candidate contaminant had been detected or had to be treated as an hazard. This information is intended to create the possibility to obtain more information if on of these sites look like the site to be investigated, characterized or remediated.
  6. Information about the candidate contaminant. The provided information is intended to give some background information about the contaminant at a layperson level including references to literature where more detailed information can be obtained.
